BANK is pleased to announce that two newly commissioned works by Sun Yitian, Shelter I and Shelter II, are currently on view as part of the 2026 Jing’an International Sculpture Exhibition at Jing’an Sculpture Park.
The ninth edition of the Jing’an International Sculpture Exhibition opened on September 24, 2026, and runs through December 31. Curated by UCCA Lab under the theme “Shapes of Becoming,” the exhibition brings together 33 artists and artist groups from 14 countries, presenting 36 works that explore moments of change that are still unfolding, not yet fully formed, or fleeting, and consider how contemporary sculpture might respond to a reality in constant transformation.
For this edition, Sun Yitian transforms the light, inflated forms of plastic playground structures and temporary air-supported shelters into monumental sculptures in natural marble. The tension between the solidity and permanence of stone and the fleeting, seemingly weightless nature of inflatable structures reflects the exhibition’s broader attention to the ways transient forms and changing realities acquire physical presence.
Originally developed from Sun’s paintings of the same title, Shelter I and Shelter II continue the artist’s exploration of the idea of “shelter.” By giving temporary spaces of play and refuge the weight and permanence of stone, the works ask what protection and security might mean today: whether they are grounded in something stable and tangible, or resemble an inflatable structure—seemingly complete, yet always vulnerable to disappearance.
