Oliver Herring's “Big Round Flat” has been acquired by the Speed Art Museum

BANK is pleased to announce that Oliver Herring's Big Round Flat (2001) has been acquired into the collection of the Speed Art Museum. The Speed Art Museum is Kentucky’s oldest and largest art museum. From its modest beginnings in 1925, the museum has continued to expand its building and enrich its collection.

Big Round Flat is a spherical work that alludes to a crashed disco ball and was one of the last knitted pieces Herring produced. "For Herring, the repetitiveness of the knitting process underscores the passage of time, both affirming life and reminding us of the inevitability of death." (Starr Figura, 1996 MoMA Catalog Essay) This work signified that the party was over for a community embattled in crisis and punctuated Herring's personal transition away from the solitary task of knitting to a more collaborative medium, video. Big Round Flatwas featured in exhibitions worldwide, including at the Tacoma Art Museum, Washington, and Borusan Contemporary in Turkey.
