Bony Ramirez in MoMA Catalogue

BANK is pleased to announce that Bony Ramirez's work Comienzo y Final de Una Verde Mañana (After Wifredo) (2024) is included in the exhibition catalogue Wifredo Lam: When I Don't Sleep, I Dream (Hardcover Book), published for the current exhibition at The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York.

Born in 1996, Bony Ramirez is a self-taught Caribbean artist. Drawing on a deep interest in Italian stylization, Renaissance portraiture, and children’s book illustration, Ramirez creates highly personal, stylized figures on paper and sets them within idyllic landscapes or scenes imbued with suggestions of violence. His work gives the Dominican Republic and the Caribbean at large incredible depth, complicating the outsider’s gaze while centering the narratives of Black and Brown bodies.

This catalogue entry pays homage to Afro-Cuban artist Wifredo Lam, a pioneering figure who brought the complexity and richness of Caribbean art to a global audience. Through this pictorial tribute, Ramirez not only acknowledges his place within this specific art-historical lineage but also advances it, shifting the axis by which these stories are told. His paintings create and uphold history, asserting that the Caribbean is not a site of erasure but a layered, living field of memory.
