Austin Lee: Light Paintings
In 2016, BANK moved from Hong Kong Road to Anfu Road, and this first solo exhibition "Light Painting" by Artist Austin Lee marks a new chapter for BANK in this new space.
As one of the first artists to explore and adopt digital technology in his practice, Austin Lee uses computer graphics software and VR as his initial paintbrush. His creative process still retains the traditional method of painting: neon-colored acrylics with resin primer are applied to every corner of the image, creating a matte effect that gives a strong three-dimensional visual sense to flat works.
The artist's paintings are often filled with innocent figures: horses, pigeons, children and mothers, flowers, etc. However, these figures are more or less detached from their normal size and appearance against the flat space, and it is more difficult to indicate a specific mood from their seemingly placid expressions and gestures. In Austin Lee's paintings, we can witness the reality of painting as a transcription of the inhuman markings of the computer tool, and in the illusion of light created by the artist, we get to think about how the tool changes our visual experience and the way we perceive the world.
