BANK Presents a Solo Exhibition by Jiang Cheng at This Year's Art Basel Hong Kong

Jiang Cheng’s practice revolves around "seeing and the structures it produces." Since 2018, he has developed the "U" series as a painterly language rooted in physicality. "U" can be read as an abbreviation of "You"—referring both to the canvas that bears the traces of his gestures and to a more primordial world beyond self-consciousness.

In Jiang’s creative process, factors such as scale, distance, and physical exertion subtly shape the final image. By relinquishing habitual ways of looking, the artist allows conscious control of the body to fall away, bringing painting into a liminal space between seeing and not-seeing. He describes this sensation as "the shiver"—a return to the physical.

Founded in 2013 as a curatorial studio in Shanghai’s historic Bund district, BANK has since evolved into an internationally active commercial gallery and cultural platform connecting China with the global art ecosystem. Now located in the former residence of He Dong in central Shanghai, BANK expanded to New York in 2025, strengthening its transnational presence. Through exhibitions, publications, art fair participations, and educational and advisory services for institutions and collectors, BANK fosters dialogue with artists, collectors, curators, and institutions, advancing artistic production and cross-regional exchange. Since its founding, BANK has earned international critical acclaim for its programming and curatorial direction, and is increasingly recognized as a key platform for contemporary art discourse and practice between Asia and the United States.

The Art Issue: What Personas Inhabit an Artist’s Studio?

If home is the smallest unit of "heaven," what does the studio mean to an artist? How do they create another world within its walls, bringing things that would never otherwise meet into proximity?

With these questions in mind, W China visited the studios of seven artists, capturing moments of life and work through the lens—whether inhabiting the space or "ransacking mountains for rough drafts." Beyond their works, the artists also left behind words both light and sharp.

Jiang Cheng’s portraits often feature ghosted, double-exposed eyes, making the act of looking itself part of the narrative. After moving to Shanghai, he chose a studio with the right windows, space, and light—painting on the first floor and living on the second.

Things that would never easily meet in the everyday world find a way to come together inside the artists’ studios.
