Obsessed with hands, Liang Hao paints realistic close-up, large-scale portraits of the appendages at work as they mysteriously manipulate shin objects. Creating illusions of technical craftsmanship while referencing art history, the Shanghai-based artist makes smaller-scale paintings that often depict books alongside appendages. with titles that allude to texts and films. Cigarette listers. reflective stainless-steel boxes and disks. beeswax-colored shapes. connectible bits of white plastic tubing. and rubber bands set the scene. Fascinated with a particular kind of gaze. Hao lets hands and objects speak for him.
