“Miguel Ángel Payano Jr.: Woo-Woo” Exhibition Series —— Nine Songs of the Mountain Ghosts
Miguel Ángel Payano's performing art Nine Songs of the Mountain Ghosts, part of his UCCA solo exhibition "Woo-Woo", is based on the poem of Qu Yuan, a poet of the Warring States period. This poem is a musical song dedicated to the god of the mountains. It recounts the ups and downs of a romantic mountain ghost as he meets his beloved in the mountains and waits for the yet-to-arrive beloved. The image of the gods in the artist's imagination overlaps with the image of the monkey in the field he is shaping, drawing on the whole poem to depict a magnificent and bizarrely moving scene. Artist Miguel invites composer Nigls and dancer Yang Jingwen to join him in his imaginative transcendence of time and space, blending different mediums, opening up dialogues between multiple art histories, and bridging seemingly disparate cultural divides.
