Lu Yang @New Museum, New York

BANK is thrilled to announce the participation of Lu Yang in the grand opening of the New Museum’s expanded building in New York. The artist’s work DOKU Heaven – God Mode (2024) is now on view as part of the landmark exhibition New Humans: Memories of the Future.

Curated across the museum’s new spaces, the exhibition brings together over 150 artists, writers, scientists, and filmmakers to trace how radical shifts in technology and society have reshaped our understanding of what it means to be human. We’re incredibly proud to see Lu Yang’s practice featured so prominently in this historic moment for the institution.

Lu Yang’s DOKU series features a virtual avatar whose name draws from the Japanese Buddhist phrase dokusho dokushi—“We are born alone, and we die alone.” In DOKU Heaven – God Mode, the avatar becomes both a stand-in for the artist and a guide through a world where spirituality, neuroscience, and technology converge. The work embodies the artist’s ongoing investigation into digital reincarnation, consciousness, and the boundaries between the physical and the virtual.
