Michael Lin transformed the façade of the Saudi Arabia Museum of Contemporary Art (SAMOCA) into a canvas, rethinking what a building can be.
‘Elevation’, commissioned by the Saudi Arabia Museum of Contemporary Art (SAMOCA) at JAX for the exhibition The Writings of Today Are a Promise for Tomorrow, reimagines the museum not as a finished structure, but as a sketch in process.
Inspired by Riyadh’s more than 3,000 hours of sunlight each year, ‘Elevation’ draws from traditional blueprinting techniques – white lines on a deep blue background.
In this installation, floral patterns stretch across the façade, softening and decorating the architecture, providing a striking counterpoint to the minimalism of modern industrial design.
More than a decorative mural, ‘Elevation’ expresses the idea that drawings do not provide definitive solutions, but open possibilities – a transitional step rather than an endpoint.
