Joey Xia (b. 1992) received his BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2016. He currently lives and works in Shanghai. Joey Xia’s work engages with issues related to his peers, culture, and art history within the context of unfathomable globalization. Xia’s practice shows extensive investigations into imagery and materiality, culminating in his signature stitched canvas paintings, sculptures, and installations. In his most recent works, the subject matter is informed by his exploration of geographical shifts and cultural drifts. Xia creates site-specific works that incorporate and respond to both the architecture of the exhibition space and materials gathered from the region. Through stitching various materials and images from different times and places, Joey Xia examines the projection of meta-narratives onto constructed individual and mainstream values.
