Formosa 101 Art Fair

13 - 15 May 2016

BANK is delighted to present Geng Yini’s Heat Wave as the solo exhibition project for FORMOSA 101 Art Fair, taking place at Taipei Expo Park from 12 May to 15 May 2016.

Geng Yini is one of the most feisty artists working in China today. In Heat Wave, a boxing ring becomes a forum where perceptions of beauty contend with the innate human tendency to take things to the extreme. Through thick, impasto paint a motley cast of uncouth folk - body builders, apes, and wrestlers - are made fantastical and humorous. With a technique that is equal parts social-realism, graffiti, and expressionism Geng’s surfaces and palate is alive with rabid splendor. Athletes with super human physiques inflate the idea of classical beauty into a debauched caricature of vigor. Images of prickly cacti juxtaposed with those of contact sports and King Kong reveal nature’s intrinsic ferocity. For Geng Yini, Heat Wave is a metaphor for the uncontrollable, extreme and absurd forces of nature all around us.
